William Staniland - a small occurence

Ancestry.com(.au) have released the NSW Police Gazettes. They contain news of crimes perpetrated and their victims. I decided to pull out, as an example, William Staniland (1861-1917). I've written of his life (http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/2008/05/willam-staniland-and-annie-snape.html), and his death (http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/2010/01/funeral-notice-for-william-staniland.html), but really don't know much about him.

So when I found a solitary reference to him in the NSW Police Gazette, I decided to post that sample. It is from a table of watches reported as lost/stolen.

Transcript:
New South Wales Police Gazette

WATCHES AND JEWELLERY REPORTED STOLEN
Date: Oct 15, 1897
Name: William Staniland, care of Mr. Cary, "Glenwood", Hereford Street, Glebe
Description: White metal watch, "Patriot" on dial

Reference: 1020

Was it missed? Enough to be reported to the police. William was a gardener - perhaps "Glenwood" was a sizeable residence that he worked at.
