Occasionally I find my posts act as fishing expeditions to find common descendants. Google brings those looking for an ancestor to my blog, and thankfully in contact with me.
This post lists the fundamental facts about the issue of William HALL and Catherine SETCHELL of Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire (now part of Cambrigeshire), England. William and Catherine were the parents of my ancestry Samuel who moved to Australia as outlined elsewhere (http://thehistoryofmatt.blogspot.com/2009/04/samuel-hall-headstone-yass-nsw.html).
William and Catherine had seven identified children together from 1816-1833, all baptized in Fenstanton, Hunts, England.
1. Samuel HALL (1816 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1884 Yass, NSW, Autralia).
Samuel was born in or near Fenstanton, Huntingdonshire, England in 1816, the son of William HALL, a shoemaker, and Catherine nee SETCHELL and baptized in the nearby Hemingford Grey on 4th Sep 1816, their abode being entered as Fenstanton.
On Oct 13 1839 Samuel married Mary Ann WELLS in Chesterton, in Cambridge. Mary Ann was from Isleham Cambridgeshire, and Samuel's sister Sarah (see below) was one of two witnesses. The 1841 census shows Samuel, a brewers labourer, and Maryan (sic) living on Back Street in the parish of Chesterton with their daughter Catharine aged 4 months - she had been baptised in Chesterton on 28 Feb 1841. Catherine died in Apr 1842 and was buried at Fenstanton. A son William was baptized on 9 Apr 1843 (abode Chesterton, occ labourer), and a son Thomas James was born abt 1846 but baptized 02 Jul 1848 with the baptizm indicating they family had moved to Barnwell, Cambridge. A third son Arthur was born in Barnwell in 1851.
In 1851 Samuel (listed as 'Jas'/James and a Brewers Labourer) and family are shown living at 54 Newmarket Rd in the nearby parish of Cambridge St Andrew the Less (also known at Barnwell). Two sons, Thomas James (3) and Arthur Walter (10 months) both born in Cambridge are present. This is first of several times Samuel uses the name James ('Jas'), however in each case all other data confirm that this census entry is the correct one. The eldest of Samuel and Mary Ann's sons was William, baptised in Chesterton in 1843, and in 1851 he is not at home, but a Visitor at the home of Robert Moore, a College Porter in the same parish.
The family sailed from Liverpool to Australia on the 'Boanerges' in 1857 with their three sons as Assisted Immigrants, arriving in Sydney on the 20th October of that year. Because there was scarlet fever on board, the ship was obliged to enter quarantine for 6 days. Samuel Hall and family settled in the Yass area, 180 miles south of Sydney. In 1860 Mary Ann died of 'epilepsy', were the family were living at 'Bendanine' near Yass. The death certificate stated that they had 3 sons living (William, Thomas and Arthur) and 2 daughters deceased, so apart from Catharine Hall they had another daughter at some point in England who also died (not yet identified). Mary Ann was buried on 14th May 1860 at St Clements Cemetery attached to the Anglican Church in Yass.
The 1871 Electoral Roll and 1872 Greville directory both state that Samuel was a farmer, living at 'Devil's Pass', Yass. By the 1878 Electoral Roll, Samuel had moved to nearby Cavan where he had a freehold property. Samuel, farmer, died on 16th May 1884 from 'congestion of the lungs' at 'Spring Creek' near Yass. Samuel was buried at the C.E. Cemetery, Yass. A photo taken by Neil Grill in 2008 shows his headstone which reads:

The Estate and Effects of Samuel consisted of seventy nine acres of selected land valued at nineteen pounds fifteen shillings, moneys invested amounting to eight hundred and fifty pounds and a horse saddle and bridle valued at four pounds.
2. Thomas Setchell HALL (1819 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1838 Fenstanton, Hunts, England). Thomas Setchell was of Fenstanton but baptized at Hemingford Grey on 23 Feb 1819, son of William (a cordwainer) and Catherine. Thomas was buried 22 Oct 1838 in Fenstanton, aged 19.
3. Mary Ann HALL (1821 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1896 London, England). Baptized at Fenstanton 14 Oct 1821, daughter of William (a shoemaker) and Catherine. Mary Ann was probably a domestic servant in 1841, and married on 19 Aug 1845 in St Peter Church, Northampton to Thomas PACK. At marriage, Mary Ann stated she was "of St Ives" (near Fenstanton) and her father "William shoemaker". Thomas was of the parish (living "St Peters Street"), aged 24 (so born abt 1820) and his father Thomas was also a "shoemaker", and the witnesses were Thomas Sr & Mary Pack. I have not been able to find any further details on Thomas’ origins - censuses will show that he was born in Wellingborough, Northants.
Mary Ann does not appear to have had childen. In 1851 the couple lived on Little Cross St, All Saints, Northampton (Thomas as a shoemaker, Maryann a binder). In 1861 I cannot find them. By 1871 the couple had moved to London, living in Islington, with William a shoemaker, Mary Ann aged 49, and were still living in Islington in 1881. 1891 census they are living Tollington Rd, Islington, with Thomas a retired shoemaker. Mary Ann died in 1896 in London, with the Probate Calendar stating she was “of 5 Romilly Road Finsbury Park died 24 February 1896” with effects worth 122 pounds. Mary Ann was buried in Islington ; headstone not known.
Thomas Pack was living in London in 1901, alone, but died in 1906 in Northampton, aged 87.

4. Sarah Setchell HALL (1823 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1896 Cambridge, England). Baptized at Fenstanton 25 May 1823, daughter of William (a shoemaker) and Catherine. Sarah was witness at her brother Samuel’s wedding in Cambridge in Oct 1839, and was probably a domestic servant in there in 1841. Sarah married on 29 Aug 1843 in Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge to John LUDMAN, stating her occupation as “in service” and living in “King St”. John LUDMAN was born to parents Thomas and Susan LUDMAN in 1812 in Impington, Cambridge.
In 1851 Sarah and John (a College Servsnt) lived on Gothic St, Cambridge. On 1 Aug 1852, Sarah and John baptized a daughter Katherine Sarah LUDMAN, and the family of three were still living on Gothic St in 1861. On 3 Oct 1862 John LUDMAN died at the home on Gothic St, aged 47, and then on 20 Mar 1867 Katherine Sarah LUDMAN died at the family home, aged 14. And so in 1871 Sarah was a widow and alone, working as a ‘college servant’. In 1881, Sarah had moved to Tennis Court Terrace, and was living with her niece Catherine S PACK, a “companion” (daughter of Sarah’s younger sister Frances). In 1891, the two were still living together, both “living on her means”.
Sarah died in Jul 1896, and buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge with her husband, daughter and sister.

5. Catherine HALL (1825 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1904 Fenstanton, Hunts, England). Baptized at Fenstanton 18 Dec 1825, daughter of William (a shoemaker) and Catherine. In 1841 Catherine was likely a servant in Cambridge, and by 1851 had returned to Fenstanton, living with her widowed father William and younger brother John in their home on Chequer Street. Catherine married on 28 Aug 1852 in Fenstanton to Samuel ROLLS. Samuel ROLLS (a butcher at time of marriage) was born to parents John (a brewer) and Charlotte ROLLS in 1827 in Fenstanton. Samuel had first married Anne HODGSON in 1846 and had several children with her prior to her death in 1852 (the same year he married Catherine).
Catherine and Samuel had at least seven children from 1855 to 1865, and apparently moved to the Connington (Hunts) as all four children in the 1861 census were born there, and in 1861 Samuel was a ‘carpenter and publican’. In 1871 the family were still in Connington, Samuel a carpenter, and Samuel died in 1878. In 1881, Catherine was a ‘carpenter’s widow’ living in Fenstanton with her youngest daughter Matilda (age 13), and in 1891 was living alone. In 1901, Catherine was a laundress aged 74, and she died in 1904, buried at Fenstanton. A headstone has not been identified.
Catherine presumably has a significant number descendants.
6. Frances HALL (1825 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - 1904 Fenstanton, Hunts, England). Baptized at Fenstanton 12 Apr 1828, daughter of William (a shoemaker) and Catherine. In 1841 Frances (12) was living at the home of Ann Smart, schoolmistress, in Fenstanton. Frances married William PACK at St. Andrew the Great, Cambridge on 20 October 1847. At the time of marriage Frances a servant of St. Andrews St in Cambridge, and the two witnesses to the wedding were Frances’ sister Sarah LUDMAN (see above) and brother John HALL (see below).
William PACK stated that he was a bachelor of full age, a shoemaker “of Wolverhampton” and the son of Thomas, shoemaker. While I have not identified a baptism for William, he is likely the brother of Thomas PACK above who married Frances’ older sister Mary Ann. Both stated that their father was “Thomas PACK, shoemaker” and both were born in Northamptonshire. William PACK was born about 1813 (All Saints parish) according to census records, and he served in the military before marrying Frances. Pension records show William (5ft 8 inches tall, dark hair, grey eyes, dark complexion) enlisted 3 Nov 1832 into the 21st regiment of foot and served in Van Diemans Land and the East Indies for 7 yrs 7 months. He then transferred in 1840 to the 31st Regiment of Foot - the Huntingdonshire regiment. William fought in a number of battles, and was shot in the thigh at one stage (‘grape shot wound’).
William was discharged at Chatham (Kent) on 23 Mar 1847, and he married Frances 6 months later in Cambridge. They must have moved quickly to Northampton as in 1851 the couple were living in Northampton (Wm a shoemaker and Chelsea pensioner and Frances a boot binder) with two children Martin and Catherine both born there. In 1861 three more children had joined the family and had moved to Wolverhampton (Staffordshire), and in 1871 there were two more children. In 1881 the family had moved back to Northampton and only son Thomas (13) was living at home, and the situation was the same in 1891. In March 1895 William died at 6 Vernon St, aged 81 and buried at St Giles Cemetery - grave 2783 but most of the Cemetery has been cleared and not clear if a headstone exists. A death notice states “William Pack 81, a veteran and survivor of the Sikh and Sutlej campaigns, died at Northampton.”
In 1901, Frances was living in Cambridge (Tennis Court Rd), living with her niece Matilda Rolls (daughter of sister Catherine above). By 1911 Frances (of ‘independent means’) was living with her daughter Catherine Sarah PACK (spinster, who had been living with Sarah LUDMAN in 1891) and niece Matilda ROLLS (a ‘companion homekeeper’). Frances died on 12 Jan 1913 and buried at Mill Road Cemetery, Cambridge with her sister Sarah LUDMAN (see above).
William left 27 pounds in effects in his probate in 1895, but when Frances died she had effects worth 999 pounds. It is assumed this came via sister Sarah LUDMAN (who had no surviving issue). Frances presumably has a significant number PACK descendants.
7. John HALL (1833 Fenstanton, Hunts, England - ?? London, England). Baptized at Fenstanton 28 Jul 1833, daughter of William (a shoemaker) and Catherine. In 1841 he was the only child living with his parents in Fenstanton, and in 1851 he was still with his parents (aged 19) on Chequer St, working as a Shoemaker like his father. By March 1853, John had moved to London with fellow Fenstanton local Adelaide ALLIN, and they were marred on 27 Mar 1853 at All Saints Church, Islington (demolished 1977). At time of marriage they both lived at 24 Upper Winchester St, John the son of William a Cordwainer, and Adelaide the daughter of John ALLIN, glazier. Witnesses were Samuel ROLLS and Ann ROBINSON (Samuel ROLLS had married John's sister Catherine HALL the year before - above - and Ann ROBINSON was actually Ann nee ALLIN, Adelaide's sister). Adelaide ALLIN was born to John and Susannah ALLIN in Fenstanton in 1833.
John and Adelaide had daughters Elizabeth Ann (Dec 1854, John a grocer, living 24 King St Charterhouse), Susannah (1856 - details same), Adelaide (1858 - details same), Annie Robinson (1860 - same address but John described as ‘Engineer’). In 1861, the family were living on 24 King St Finsbury/Clerkenwell with John described as a General Shopkeeper ; the exception was Adelaide (age 2) staying with maternal aunt/uncle James and Ann ROBINSON elsewhere in London (and again in 1871). In 1871 the family had moved to Hoxton St Shoreditch (John, a ‘beer seller’). Adelaide died in Aug 1874, and was buried at Fenstanton:

The following year (1875), John married widow Mary SNELL nee WRIGHT. Mary was born in Cookson, Northamptonshire abt 1837 and had 2 children with husband James SNELL in London. John and Mary seem to have moved to Nunhead Surrey in London and had children Martha HALL (b 1877) and George James HALL (b 1879). In 1881 the family were living in Peckham, and again in 1891, John a Greengrocer and step-son Arthur J and son George at home. Finally in 1901, John and Mary were living in Camberwell, John as a General Shopkeeper.
John died around 1 Apr 1902, aged 70 abode listed as 65 Nunhead Grove, with no headstone likely at Forest Hill Rd cemetery. John likely has a number of descendants - his daughters married: Elizabeth Ann to Joseph Frederick Laney GREEN in 1872 ; Susannah to Edward Stephen TICE in 1872 ; Adelaide to William Charles BRASSETT in 1879 ; the fate of the other three children not traced.
